Frequently Asked Questions What is HughesNet?
HughesNet is a provider of high speed internet service that is available everywhere in the contiguous US. What are my computer system requirements for HughesNet?
Windows 98SE or Mac OS 10.1 or higher Network Capability—10/100 Ethernet pre-equipped Can I network multiple computers using this system?
Yes. Networking equipment and installation are not included with the packages. Multiple simultaneous users can affect speeds. Networking is not recommended using the Home Service Plan. Can the Installer hook up my network equipment?
You can ask the installation technician about hooking up network equipment at the time of installation. Some are able to complete this for you depending on the requirements of your system. Network equipment and trouble shooting are not supported by AGSL or Hughes. The network manufacturer should be contacted for support of these products. Do I still need a phone line?
No. The HughesNet system both transmits and receives all information via the satellite. No phone line connection is needed for the set up or use of the system. If I already have a DirecTV or other satellite dish, do I need to have another dish put up for the HughesNet system?
Yes. HughesNet requires a unique dish for their system to operate. Multiple systems cannot currently be combined onto a single dish. If I already have DirecTV, can the two services be on the same bill and are there any deals for bundling the two services together?
HughesNet and DirecTV are not affiliated with each other so services cannot be combined or bundled. Why does a HughesNet certified installer have to be the one to install my system?
The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) requires that any system that transmits and receives a signal be installed by a trained professional that meets their requirements. How quickly will I be up and running?
After placing your order, you will normally be contacted within 1 business day to set up an installation date. Installation generally is completed within 7-10 days from when you placed the order. What is transmission latency?
Latency refers to the time it takes for data to travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles), which causes about a half-second delay for your computer to communicate with a website. Due to this latency, multiplayer "twitch" games or real time equities trading are not recommended with HughesNet. Can I run a VPN over HughesNet?
VPN usage is not recommended with the Home Service Plan. VPN service works with some packages, depending on the VPN system itself. You will likely have reduced speeds while operating the VPN. Speeds will return to normal when the VPN session is over. VPN service and set up is not supported by AGSL or HughesNet. Can I have a HughesNet system installed on a mobile unit—such as my RV or boat?
HughesNet is designed for fixed locations only. It would not be able to maintain signal with the satellite while moving. Where do I get support if I have a problem with my system?
You can go to “MyHughesNet.com” to access online chat with technical support, check your usage, test your speeds, get online invoices, etc. You can also call 1-866-347-3292 customer support 24 hours, 7 days a week. What is included in the Subscriber Agreement?
